The first-ever worldwide artificial intelligence (AI) safety summit is scheduled to take place in Britain from November 1–2, at Bletchley Park in southern England.
About 100 people are expected to attend the event, including academics, nonprofits, tech company executives, and world leaders. World leaders including Chinese Vice Premier Wu Zhaohui, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will not be present. China’s attendance is an additional indication of the thawing of ties with Britain following the visit to Beijing in August by its top diplomat, James Cleverly.
The most well-known AI executives will be present, including Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, which created ChatGPT, and Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google Deepmind. Additionally in attendance will be representatives from Tencent and Alibaba. Elon Musk, the multibillionaire businessman, will be present. Leading roles will also be played by academics and nonprofits, led by AI “godfathers” such as Stuart Russell and Geoffrey Hinton, as well as organisations like the Future of Life Institute and the Alan Turing Institute.
The summit seeks to kick off a global dialogue about AI regulation going forward. Though some governments have begun developing their own regulations, there are not any comprehensive international laws addressing AI safety at the moment. Roundtable talks about the risks associated with upcoming technological advancements are on the agenda. Examples include the possibility that terrorists or hackers could use AI systems to create bioweapons.
Following Brexit, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hopes to establish his country as a leader in AI safety, bridging the divide between the rival economic blocs of the US, China, and the EU. The event takes place nearly a year after OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot that sparked discussions about the potential of the quickly evolving technology around the world.
