Due to Storm Ciarán’s predicted arrival of intense rain and wind, the Met Office has issued two “danger to life” warnings for the entire United Kingdom.
Strong winds and rain are a potential threat to life, so amber alerts have been issued for portions of Wales, the south-east and west of England. On Wednesday, there will also be a yellow alert for South Wales and the South West of England.
Up until Friday, rain and wind warnings will be in effect throughout the United Kingdom. On Wednesday night, they will remain in effect until Friday. Strong winds and heavy rain are expected to disrupt travel on Wednesday and Thursday in Wales and the south of England, as well as on Thursday and Friday in the northeast of the country, according to a warning from National Rail. Travellers are being advised by Brittany Ferries that there may be weather-related delays and/or cancellations on Wednesday, November 1, and (especially) Thursday, November 2.
As Storm Ciarán crosses over Northern Ireland, some areas become inundated with rainwater. There is a yellow rain warning in effect until 9am tomorrow, and parts of Newry in County Down are under water. Greenpeace has demanded action, claiming that as the climate crisis deepens, flooding will occur more frequently.
