The new president of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has appointed his political friend Ousmane Sonko as the country’s prime minister.
Sonko, who was a staunch opponent of former president Macky Sall, is known for inspiring young people in this West African country, but was banned from the presidential election on March 24 due to defamation. He denied any wrongdoing.
Campaigning for his colleague during the campaign with the slogan “Diomaye is Sonko,” Sonko urged his supporters to vote for his successor, Faye, who ended up winning more than 54% of the votes in the first round of the election. happened in the country.
Faye, was inaugurated as the president of Senegal on Tuesday.
Speaking after his appointment, Sonko said he will present a complete list of ministerial appointments to President Faye for approval.
“There will be no question of leaving him (Faye) alone to handle this heavy responsibility,” Sonko said.
The relationship between the two men strengthened during the election period after both were released from prison two weeks before the election.
Sonko, who is now 79 years old, shined like a candle in his country’s politics with the support of the Senegalese youth who are frustrated with the widespread unemployment and corruption among the leaders of the country.
Senegalese people are facing high unemployment rates and food prices as a result of the war in Ukraine.
Faye and Sonko campaigned on promises to eradicate corruption.
Ahead of the election, Senegal’s new president released a statement about his assets and called on other candidates to do the same. She listed a house in Dakar and an area outside the capital and his small town.

Who is Sonko?
He was born in Thiès, the third largest city in the country in 1974.
He grew up mostly in Casamance and later studied at Gaston-Berger University in Saint-Louis, where he received a master’s degree in public law in 1995.
He received his master’s degree in public law from the University Gaston Berger (UGB) in Saint Louis. In 2001 he graduated from ENA, “Taxation and Domains” department.
He also studied at the National School of Administration and Judiciary.
Before entering politics, Sonko worked for 15 years as a tax inspector in Pikine.
He became famous for talking about corruption in the country and blamed the leaders of Senegal. He went to prison for two years.
In 2014 Sonko founded the African Nationalists of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Brotherhood. Between 2017 and 2022, he became a member of the People’s Assembly.
He presented his plan in 2018 to his fellow Indians who ran for the presidency in 2019.
In September 2021, Sonko launched the “Free People” alliance and stated that it is important for the opposition to win the Senegalese district councils and parliament.
His coalition for the unity of hope won the city of Dakar and 56 seats out of 165 seats in the Senegalese parliament, and Sonko was elected Mayor of Ziguinchor.
Sonko, who entered the politics of Senegal in a tough struggle, will be the 16th Prime Minister of the country.
