James Maddison’s goal helped Tottenham defeat Fulham 2-0 and move two points clear of the leaders in the Premier League, earning him the title of most influential player in the league this season.
At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Maddison scored coolly off a pass from Heung-Min Son after the South Korean had given Spurs the lead. He also won Player of the Match and picked up five assists. This season, in Jamie Carragher’s opinion, he has outperformed everyone else in the competition.
The 26-year-old Madison joined Tottenham for a reported £40 million in the summer. Since then, he has started all nine of their Premier League games, settling in quickly and propelling them to the top of the standings. He is welcomed the spotlight, doing interviews with us, and joining a larger club.
Maddison celebrated the victory and said it was his first goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He added that Maddison began dropping deeper and contributing more to the build-up, and Fulham stopped pressing as much.
But the Spurs manager criticised his team’s second-half performance and issued a warning about the value of upholding discipline. He berated the team for losing focus and not playing the football they truly wanted to play in the second half.
