Together, on and off the field, the Baltimore Orioles—a team that surprised everyone in 2023—found friendship through their common Christian faith. The team, which included players ranging in age from 22 to 36, got together once a week for Bible study and worship.
Gunnar Henderson, the youngest player and current front-runner for the American League Rookie of the Year Award, expressed gratitude for the team spirit. The team’s oldest player, Kyle Gibson, who is up for the Roberto Clemente Award for his community service, said that the team’s ability to come together over a cause greater than baseball is a result of his faith.
The 29-year-old pitcher for the Orioles, Tyler Wells, praised Austin Hays and catcher Adley Rutschman for sharing their personal testimonies of faith with the team. The 33-year-old pitcher Danny Coulombe added that a lot of his teammates place a high value on their Christian faith.
After overcoming the Texas Rangers in the American League Division Series, the Orioles won their first American League East championship since 2014. Sports Spectrum revealed in August, following Gibson’s 100th career victory, that Gibson was leading the American League-leading ball club spiritually. Gibson’s high school mission trip and involvement in a youth group helped to strengthen his faith during his convalescence from an elbow injury.
