Medvedev eases past Zverev into semis at ATP Finals after Alcaraz hits back

Daniil Medvedev defeated Alexander Zverev of Germany to become the first player to advance to the ATP Finals semifinals.

Zverev, the two-time champion, could lose out on a semi-final spot if he makes costly mistakes against Medvedev. While Medvedev stole the first set and broke serve to win the match, he trailed 4-1 in the opening set tiebreak and erred on a volley.

Carlos Alcaraz of Spain defeated Andrey Rublev in the ATP Finals to get back on track. The 20-year-old will play Medvedev in his last group match on Friday, but the Russian’s 7-6 (7), 6-4 victory over Zverev—whose final group match is against Rublev—ensures that he advances from the group.

Alcaraz put on a commanding performance against a collapsing Russian to snap a three-match losing streak. While holding strong in the opening set, Rublev faltered at 5-5 when he lost his serve, giving Alcaraz an easy hold. After dropping serve early in the second set, which stunned the Turin crowd and forced Rublev to clean his knee with blood during the changeover, his performance quickly declined.
